Bulgarian telecoms incumbent Vivacom has announced it has become the third DTH provider in Bulgaria, after launching services in the country via Intelsat’s IS-12 satellite.
Called Vivacom TV, it will compete with other local DTH providers Bulsatcom and TotalTV. Distributed by Intelsat’s bird at 45E, the new venture will offer a range of pay-TV packages including HD programming in the very near future.
Vivacom TV’s launch had been in the pipeline for some time, and comes as the Bulgarian media market struggles to recover from the economic downturn. Large pan-European media groups such as CME and Modern Times Group have recently reported that their Bulgarian operations performed markedly worse than others markets.
An Intelsat spokesman told SatelliteFinance that the company has enjoyed a 15-year partnership with Vivacom, supporting its other services that include fixed, mobile phone and internet capabilities.
Jean-Philippe Gillet, Intelsat’s regional vice-president, Europe and Middle East, said: “Eastern Europe represents a growing media sector for satellite operators, and Intelsat is committed to strengthening its media services in the region.”
