Virgin Mobile Latin America (VMLA) said it is “on track” to launch an MVNO in Chile early next year, in the first stage of an expansion of MVNO services in the region.
The MVNO will operate on the local network of Movistar, the Telefonica subsidiary.
VMLA said it was making progress in the planning of its expansion throughout Latin America over the next two years.
A Virgin spokesman told TelecomFinance that the company chose Chile as its first MVNO in Latin America because it was in more advanced talks with the operators there and because the country had a strong economy.
Virgin is launching its MVNOs in Latin America through a partnership with wireless services company Tribe Mobile.
Phil Wallace, president of Tribe Mobile and chairman of VMLA, said that Virgin Mobile Latin America was looking forward to working with Movistar.
“[Movistar] were quick to understand the potential of partnering with VMLA as a way to serve existing and untapped consumers in creative ways – just as Virgin Mobile has done in the U.K., the U.S. and other countries worldwide. “
Virgin Mobile currently operates in seven countries (Australia, Canada, France, India, South Africa, the UK and US) and serves approximately 15m mobile subscribers.
