UK broadband and cable operator Virgin Media has launched a beta trial of its first online and mobile TV player.
Called Virgin Media Player, the service promises content from broadcasters ITV, LIVING, Disney, Cartoon Network, National Geographic, Discovery, as well as MTV Networks UK & Ireland.
The company said more channels were being lined up to be launched on the platform before the end of the year, but declined to give details. It did say early advertisers on Virgin Media Player include its pay-per-view movie service FilmFlex and US food giant Kellogg’s.
Cindy Rose, the company’s executive director of digital entertainment, said in a statement: “We continue to explore innovative new ways to bring our customers’ favourite content to them and, with Virgin Media Player, we’re making sure they’re spoilt for choice.”
The company added that Virgin Media, which has also recently launched an online music video on demand service, is working towards a full launch of the player later this year.
Its ‘three-screen line-up’ is currently available to subscribers of Virgin Media’s XL package who also have a broadband connection with the company.
