UK cableco Virgin Media’s testing of 4G services based on its fibre network could prompt the company to bid in this year’s spectrum auction.
“There’s a huge challenge to meet this growing demand for connectivity and we’re looking at ways to put the power of our fibre optic network where people need it most, both inside and outside the home,” said a spokesperson for Virgin Media, which currently operates an MVNO through local mobile operator Everything Everywhere.
“We’re working closely with partners across the UK to develop our proven Wi-Fi solution and our recent 4G trial proved the capability of our small cell solution.”
UK regulator Ofcom will auction 4G frequencies in the last quarter of 2012, and has proposed reserving some spectrum in the 2.6Ghz band to open up the mobile market to more players.
It is currently consulting on the auction’s rules, and expects to make a final decision on them this summer.
