Macedonian telecoms regulator the Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC) has granted a 10-year licence to mobile operator Vip to use radio frequencies in the 1720-1730MHz uplink and 1815-1825MHz downlink to provide GSM and UMTS services nationwide.
The licence may be extended for a further 10 years, Vip, a member of the Telekom Austria Group, said in a statement.
Vip has also received regulatory approval to use spectrum in the 880-890MHz and 1710-1720MHz uplink and 925-935MHz/1805-1845MHz downlink for GSM and UMTS services.
As such, Vip plans to launch its own 3G network, aiming to complete technical preparations by the end of the month. The company said it will then provide further details on its official launch of 3G services.
Founded in 2007, Vip formed a strategic partnership with Vodafone in 2008 and, according to its website, now has more than 23 million customers nationwide.
