VimpelCom has named Peter Chernyshov as the new CEO of Ukrainian unit Kyivstar following the resignation of its founder and current head.
Chernyshov will replace Igor Lytovchenko, who is retiring after 20 years as CEO, on 25 June, the telco said.
Chernyshov has 12 years of experience as a CEO. He headed up the Carlsberg Group in Ukraine for several years before being promoted to vice-president, responsible for six Eastern European countries. VimpelCom noted that he led Carslberg Ukraine through a major transformation process, improved its market share and delivered year-on-year increases in revenue and EBITDA margin.
VimpelCom took an impairment charge of US$2.1bn on assets in Ukraine in March, although it said in May that macro-economic and political turbulence in the country did not “materially” affect Kyivstar’s results for Q1 2014.
Kyivstar reported EBITDA for the quarter of UAH1.4bn (US$120m), down 8% year-on-year. The Ukrainian business, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, is in the midst of a “transformation programme” designed to improve customer service and operational performance.
