Russian mobile operator VimpelCom confirmed on Thursday it was in talks to acquire a stake in Egypt’s Orascom Telecom, according to a Wall Street Journal article.
Chief executive Alexander Izosimov was quoted as saying that VimpelCom is also in discussions to buy Italian mobile operator Wind Telecomunicazioni.
In previous weeks, there have been several reports suggesting that the Russian operator has been in talks regarding the purchase of 100% of Wind and 51% of Orascom. Both targets are part of Weather Investments, which is controlled by Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris.
A few days ago, Sawiris, the head of Orascom Telecom and Weather Investments, also told Canadian journalists that he was in talks with VimpelCom about a possible takeover.
