Russian operator VimpelCom has received the approval of the competition regulator FAS to buy regional mobile operator New Telephone Company (NTC), according to Telecompaper.
Applications from MTS and MegaFon have reportedly been rejected, but VimpelCom’s one was cleared because of its modest penetration in the Primorye region, where NTC has 40% mobile market share.
South Korea’s KT Corp owns 80% of NTC. It reportedly appointed Credit Suisse for the transaction. The operator could be worth US$500m.
VimpelCom was not immediately available for comments.
