Satellite broadband specialist ViaSat has acquired LonoCloud, a venture-backed start-up that specialises in cloud networking software. Financial details were not disclosed.
ViaSat stated that it intends to integrate the core components of the LonoCloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) product with the ViaSat broadband network.
Commenting on the deal, Mark Dankberg, ViaSat chairman and CEO, said: “Adding this core technical capability to our broadband network will both enhance our existing offering as well as shorten development cycles for new service offerings.”
Founded in 2011, LonoCloud is a spin-out from the University of California San Diego, where professor and current LonoCloud CTO Ingolf Krueger developed cloud computing technology.
Among its venture capital backers is Blackbird Ventures, ran by serial entrepreneur Neil Senturia, LonoCloud’s executive chairman. Senturia was initially the company’s CEO and was responsible for raising US$1.5m in angel investment.
