The US’ largest carrier, Verizon Communications, is not interested in acquiring America Movil’s (AMX) assets, its CFO Fran Shammo told journalists yesterday.
He added that the company is not looking to carry out any large acquisitions in Europe either, including in the areas of content or mobile technology, a spokesperson has confirmed.
AMX, which controls 70% of the Mexican mobile market and 80% of the fixed-line segment, is required to sell some assets, worth an estimated US$17.5bn, as per changes to the country’s telecoms laws aimed at curbing its dominance.
The company, which is owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, is also planning to spin off its tower assets.
AMX has reportedly been holding talks with potential bidders, including US telco AT&T, Japan’s Softbank, Bell Canada and China Mobile, to discuss the potential sale.
Gabriel Contreras, head of Mexico’s telecoms regulator IFT, was quoted as saying yesterday that it has not yet received an asset divestment plan from the telecoms giant.
