Unitel has named Alexander Sorvachyov as its new CFO, filling the vacancy left by Alexander Vorobyov who was promoted to CEO of the VimpelCom subsidiary in January.
Sorvachyov joins the telco, which operates as Beeline Uzbekistan, from Rostelecom’s regional Russian operator NSS where he was finance director.
Prior to that Sorvachyov had spent nine years working for MTS, while Vorobyov was also working for Russia’s largest mobile operator.
The Beeline brand is the second biggest mobile operator in Uzbekistan after TeliaSonera’s UCell.
Last year, Uzbek tax authorities launched an investigation into Unitel, and in March VimpelCom became the third major telco, after TeliaSonera and MTS, facing legal issues due to their activities in the country.
Amsterdam-based VimpelCom is under investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Dutch authorities.
