Calls are being made for Uruguay’s government to allow operators more access to broadband spectrum.
Sebastián Cabello, regulation manager for the public policy area of the GSM Association, led the appeal at a conference organized by Uruguay’s national telecommunications department, Dinatel.
This was reported on President José Mujica’s personal website.
Cabello argued that the introduction of digital TV should free up spectrum that could be used for mobile broadband and, as there are not many local TV channels in Uruguay, much of that spectrum could be made available today.
He continued to say that wireless broadband was a much cheaper way of reaching rural areas than fixed line telephony, but for rural Uruguay to be unlocked, more spectrum was needed.
