Colombian telco UNE EPM last week won the auction for spectrum in the 2.5GHz frequency band, which will enable the operator to launch mobile internet and content services.
UNE EPM will pay US$40m for the spectrum rights, allowing it to broaden its current offering of fixed line and pay-TV services across the country. The telco is also active on the mobile market through its 25% stake in mobile operator Tigo.
Other bidders for the spectrum included DirecTV. The auction was held by the country’s Ministry of IT and Communications (Mintic), and the bidding rules state that the winner must invest US$75m in services including mobile, broadband, internet, fixed line, long distance and TV, of which UNE has selected to offer mobile internet and mobile audiovisual content.
