John Malone’s cable giant Liberty Global (LGI) will combine its Austrian and Swiss operations in a new, Zurich-based unit.
The new entity will be led by the current head of UPC Cablecom in Switzerland, Eric Tveter.
LGI said in a statement that the organisational change, effective from 1 August, will enable the Austrian and Swiss operations “to join forces with a focus on the unique customer needs in both markets, benefitting from economies of scale and providing opportunities to explore further regional cooperation”.
Diederik Karsten, executive vice president of LGI’s European broadband operations, said Tveter is ideally positioned for the role, having more than 30 years’ experience in the cable sector. Over the past five years, Tveter led the turnaround of the UPC Cablecom, Karsten noted.
Meanwhile, Thomas Hintze, managing director of UPC Austria, will become chairman of the Austrian business and senior adviser, reporting to Tveter.
LGI has operations in 14 countries, 12 of which are within Europe. UPC Austria and UPC Cablecom are Austria and Switzerland’s largest cable TV operators, with 2.6 million and 1.3 million service subscribers respectively as of 31 March.
