The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Jordan has threatened action against local mobile operators over colluding to increase SMS prices.
The TRC had instructed the operators to stop raising tariffs on international SMS immediately, and to tell subscribers tariffs would no longer be increased, after a study conducted by the TRC found the companies had conspired to raise international text message rates, a violation of antitrust regulations. Jordan has four mobile operators: Zain Jordan, part of Kuwait’s Zain Group; Orange Jordan, a JV between Jordan Telecom Group and France Telecom; XPress Telecom a JV between NASCO and Qatar’s Qtel; and Umniah, owned by Bahrain’s Batelco. All have denied the claims.
