In other news, TRA is to release 30 MHz of unallocated spectrum in the 1710-1880 MHz band in a tender process.
The spectrum will be released on a temporary basis, since it will in the future form part of a tender for post-3G public mobile system licences. As such, any winner would have to agree to relinquish usage at that time.
The duration will be six months, and can be extended for further two-month periods. The available spectrum includes three, 5 MHz Sub-Band lots: o Sub-Band 1 (Uplink 1750 -1755 MHz, Downlink 1845- 1850 MHz) o Sub-Band 2 (Uplink 1755-1760 MHz, Downlink 1850- 1855 MHz) o Sub-Band 3 (Uplink 1780-1785 MHz, Downlink 1875- 1880 MHz) Winners would be charged on a pro-rata basis. Expressions of interest are due on or before 4pm on 21 April 2011.
Batelco, Zain and STC-owned Viva are the existing mobile operators, operating in a market with 150% penetration.
