Thai state-owned telcos TOT and CAT have reportedly set up a joint committee to coordinate plans to share infrastructure.
Chaired by TOT board director Suranan Wongvithayakamjorn, the committee will look at how the operators’ networks in each province can be used to support the government’s digital economy policy, The Nation reported.
Both TOT and CAT do not believe they need to merge in order to survive, according to the newspaper.
This June, local media reported that Thai authorities were reconsidering merging the two companies. There have been two failed attempts to combine them over the past decade, due to unresolved legal issues.
According to The Nation, TOT has also contacted five major telecoms operators – Advanced Info Service (AIS), Total Access Communication (Dtac), True Corp, Samart Corp and Loxley – about potential strategic alliances.
TOT and other local operators are reportedly facing a battle with regulator the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to retain spectrum. The watchdog plans to reclaim certain airwaves to re-auction and reallocate others to the broadcasting industry.
Neither TOT nor CAT was available for comment.
