Italian operator Telecom Italia has appealed the Argentine antitrust regulator’s decision that the telco must sell off its stake in Telecom Argentina, stating that any competition issues are related to Telecom Italia majority shareholder Telco, not Telecom Italia.
Telecom Italia controls Telecom Argentina through its stake in the holding company Sofra, which in turn controls the Argentine operator. The other half of Sofra is held by the Argentine based Werthein group.
Spanish telco Telefonica is one of the shareholders in Telco and as it also operates in Argentina through Telefonica Argentina. The local antitrust regulator has claimed that this is damaging to fair competition. Telecom Argentina and Telefonica Argentina are the two leaders of the Argentine telecoms market.
Telecom Italia was last week ordered to sell off its stake in Sofra by February 25.
