Three candidates have placed binding bids in the second round for the privatisation of up to 75% of Zambian telecoms incumbent Zamtel.
The Zambia Development Agency received offers from the Altimo Holdings and VimpelCom consortium of Russia, the LAP Greencom Ltd and LAP Green Networks consortium of Libya, which is understood to be advised by Standard Bank, while the third consortium is Angolan and consists of Unitel and Angola Cables.
Finally, India’s BSNL, which had been short-listed, withdrew from the process.
The bids will be reviewed by the government’s adviser, RP Capital Advisors, for about two weeks and a preferred bidder or bidders will be announced on or around 29 March.
Negotiations will then start with an independent negotiating team to be appointed by the ZDA board and the transaction is expected to close by the end of H1.
