The Ukrainian telecoms regulator has approved applications from three entities to take part in the country’s long-awaited 3G spectrum auction.
While the regulator, NCCIR, did not name the bidders in its statement announcing the approvals, Ukraine currently has three mobile network operators: VimpelCom-owned Kyivstar, MTS Ukraine and Turkey’s Astelit (Life).
According to local reports, infrastructure operator Ukrtower, a unit of Turkish mobile operator Turkcell – Astelit’s majority shareholder – had also applied to take part with the aim of developing a 3G network to be shared by all local operators.
The auction is set to commence on 16 February.
Three 15-year licences will be available for 2×15 MHz of spectrum in the 1,920-1,935, 2,110-2,125, 1,950-1,965, 2,140-2,155, 1,965-1,980 and 2,155-2,170 MHz bands.
