Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio have won a E295m contract to build the Sicral 2 satellite and ground communications system for the French Defence Procurement Agency and the Italian Ministry of Defence.
Thales will receive E193m and Telespazio, which will build the ground segment, will get E102m.
Work on the system will begin some time in June following the signing of a framework loan agreement.
Sicral 2 is designed to meet the military communications needs of the future. It is unusual in that even within the EU, nation states have not tended to have joint military satellites.
The process was aided by the fact that Telespazio is 33% owned by the wider Thales group.
