Thales has announced plans to acquire US tactical satcom terminal manufacturer Tampa Microwave for an undisclosed sum.
The companies expect to close the deal in Q1 2012, subject to regulatory approvals.
According to Thales, the acquisition of privately-held Tampa Microwave, which designs, develops and manufactures satcom terminals and related products for government and commercial customers, will complement its existing product portfolio in the US.
“The acquisition is a demonstration of Thales’s commitment to build on its core capabilities in direct support of its long term growth prospects,” said Allan Cameron, President and CEO of Thales USA, the group’s US unit.
Following the deal, Tampa Microwave will operate as a subsidiary of its acquirer’s US-based Thales Communications manufacturing company, which operates under a proxy agreement with the American Department of Defense (DoD).
Michael Sheehan, President and CEO of Thales Communications, said: “The acquisition provides Thales with the capability to support DoD initiatives for wideband technology – voice, video, and data – at the tactical level.
“Combining the strengths of both our companies will result in greater innovations which will help better serve the needs of our customers.”
For Tampa Microwave, the deal gives it access to more capital and a greater market share.
Eric Guerrazzi, President of Tampa Microwave, said: “Being partnered with Thales will provide Tampa Microwave with resources and access to innovative technology to better support our customers. We will also benefit from Thales’s global reach as we seek to market our family of SATCOM terminals (X, Ku and Ka frequency bands) to new and existing customers.”
The last acquisition Thales USA participated in was announced back in January 2011, when DRS Sonar Systems, a manufacturing joint venture it shares with US military supplier DRS, acquired local tech firm Advanced Acoustic Concepts for an undisclosed sum.
