Thailand is moving closer to launching its 3G auction after the country’s regulator set a reserve price for the mobile licences, according to a Reuters report.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has reportedly decided that the price for each of the nine slots of 5MHz to be auctioned will start at Bt4.5bn (US$141m).
Each licence will have a 15-year term.
The 3G auction has long been awaited in Thailand as it will allow the successful bidders to offer services using the 2.1GHz spectrum.
Currently, only state-owned TOT holds spectrum in the 2.1GHz band. The other mobile operators – AIS, DTAC and True – can also offer 3G services but in lower frequencies and under concession agreements with TOT and CAT, the other state-controlled carrier.
A public hearing on the 3G auction is scheduled for July while the auction itself is expected to take place in Q4, reports Reuters.
The NBTC was not immediately available for comment.
