Thai authorities are reconsidering earlier plans to combine state owned telcos TOT and CAT Telecom.
The permanent secretary of the Information and Communications Technology Ministry, Surachai Srisarakam, proposed to revisit the idea, the Bangkok Post reported.
Attempts to merge TOT and CAT failed twice in the last decade, reportedly due to legal issues that could not be resolved at the time.
The article quoted TOT president Yongyuth Wattanasin speaking out in favour of a merger. While pointing at issues such as the different valuation of some assets, he also said it was the right time to look again at a potential merger.
According to the Bangkok Post the National Council of Peace and Order (NCPO), the ruling body set up by the junta controlling Thailand following the recent coup d’etat, is now looking at chances of a merger of the two telcos.
