Mobile satellite operator Terrestar has renewed the in-orbit insurance for its Terrestar-1 satellite, the company announced in early July. The spacecraft, which is one of the largest and most powerful commercial communications satellite ever built, was launched in July 2009 after a brief delay.
The postponement was due to the on-orbit anomaly that occurred to Eutelsat’s W2A satellite. Both satellites used the S-band unfurlable reflector antenna built by Harris Corp, and Terrestar sought to amass additional data to verify that its satellite would not be affected by the same issue. Prior to the launch, Terrestar held discussions with the insurance community to allay any such concerns.
ISB was broker for the launch plus one placement, while Brandywinecreek Associates was previously appointed as the satellite operator’s insurance consultant for the launch of its future satellites.
