Telkom Indonesia, the country’s incumbent, is looking to enter new markets in Southeast Asia, particularly in Myanmar [Burma], Rhinaldi Firmansjah, the company’s CEO, was quoted as saying by Dow Jones.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting in Indonesia, he reportedly explained that Myanmar is particularly interesting to Telkom given its large population (approximately 55 million). The country currently has only one mobile operator.
Separately, Firmansjah said that the company is planning to release treasury stocks by either selling them to the market or increasing the government’s 52.47% stake in Telkom.
Shareholders are expected to vote on this proposal at a meeting either in May or in June, he added.
The company was not immediately available for comment.
