South African operator Telkom is reported to be in talks with MTN Group about sharing their mobile networks in the country.
Last November, Telkom’s CEO Sipho Maseko said the company was assessing options for its struggling mobile unit. Reports suggested at the time that wireless rivals MTN and Cell C could be interested in some sort of deal or partnership.
An agreement between landline-focused Telkom and MTN could be announced this week.
It would help reduce costs for both operators and would give MTN, number two in the mobile industry, access to some of Telkom’s spectrum, Bloomberg reported citing two people familiar with the matter.
MTN declined to comment on the report but said that it “engages with companies such as Telkom on matters such as roaming agreements”. Telkom was not immediately available for comment.
