TeliaSonera’s chairman has announced his intention to step down in April to give the Swedish telco a “new start” following controversy over its Uzbek operations.
Anders Narvinger’s plan to leave the company at its next AGM comes as it searches for a replacement of its CEO Lars Nyberg, whose contract expires in December 2013.
In a statement today, Narvinger said: “I have understood that the nomination committee would like to see changes on the board of directors, and to create something of a new start for TeliaSonera, where a change of CEO is due next year. In light of this, it is a natural step for me to announce that I will not stand for re-election.”
TeliaSonera denies allegations of bribery and money laundering in Uzbekistan. These allegations were made in a Swedish broadcast that investigated a 2007 3G licence deal.
A probe has been launched into the matter by Swedish anti-corruption investigators. The company has also hired Mannheimer Swartling to conduct its own review into the allegations.
