The CEO of Swedish mobile operator TeliaSonera has been cited saying the group is open to acquisitions, as reports link it with rival 3’s assets in Denmark.
Reports citing local daily Dagens Industri suggest 3 could be put up for sale for around SKr8bn (US$1.17bn). When TeliaSonera CEO Lars Nyberg was asked whether he could be a buyer, he reportedly said he would always buy if the price was right.
However, SKr8bn would be too expensive for TeliaSonera, which is itself struggling to profit in the country, reported Reuters.
Nyberg is also cited saying that he thought in-market consolidation would be good for Europe, although regulators were making such a process difficult.
TeliaSonera and 3 Denmark were unable to comment on the speculation.
3 Denmark is the smallest of the four operators in the country, behind incumbent TDC, Norway’s Telenor and TeliaSonera.
Strong competition in Denmark brought TeliaSonera and Telenor to establish an infrastructure joint venture in the country, which was recently approved by regulators. The partnership will see the two operators merge their network equipment, including towers and antennas, in the country under a newly established company.
