Swedish incumbent TeliaSonera has partnered with Chinese manufacturer Huawei and Sweden-based vendor Ericsson to build a national 2G/3G/4G network in Norway.
Ericsson will provide equipment for the northern part of the country, with Huawei supplying the southern part.
“We are building a new, world class mobile network in Norway with 2G, 3G and 4G access to offer our customers a major coverage and speed improvement,” said Claes Nycander, CTO of Mobility Services at TeliaSonera.
“We have selected Huawei and Ericsson to deliver the network based on their high quality technology and competitive total solutions.”
Nycander added that in “2012, 95% of the Norwegian population will have 3G coverage and 89% of the population will have access to 4G services”.
The company became the first to launch commercial 4G networks in the world in December 2009, when the technology was made available to customers in Sweden’s Stockholm and Norway’s Oslo.
It also offers commercial 4G in Denmark, Estonia and Finland, and is piloting the technology with customers in Lithuania and Latvia. In addition, TeliaSonera claims to have made live 4G connections in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
TeliaSonera declined to disclose financial details about the new Norwegian network.
