Costa Rica’s state power and telecoms monopoly Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad has signed an interconnection contract with TV broadcaster Televisora de Costa Rica, according to ICE.
Under the agreement, Televisora will have access to ICE’s Global Crossing Pacific fibre optic submarine cable connection and will also be permitted to set up equipment inside the ICE station.
Access to the cable will allow the TV broadcaster to offer broadband internet services.
According to the statement, ICE has already made similar agreements with five other national companies and is looking to sign further contracts.
Telecoms regulator Sutel will receive written offers on November 5 for spectrum in the long-awaited liberalization of the Costa Rican telecoms market.
No financial details were released regarding the transaction.
