Italian space systems services company Telespazio has acquired two European space solutions providers from local aerospace company Finmeccanica for an undisclosed sum.
Telespazio, a JV between Finmeccanica (67%) and French manufacturer Thales (33%), has acquired UK-based VEGA and Genoa-headquartered Elsag Datamat as part of a wider restructuring.
In a statement announcing the deal on January 14, Telespazio said its “new structure will help to strengthen its role as Finmeccanica’s centre of excellence for space services and applications by broadening its technological competencies and product portfolio, particularly in relation to the institutional market in the UK, Germany and more generally in Europe”.
VEGA, which provides consultancy and engineering services as well as solutions to support missions in space, has operations in the UK, Germany, France, Holland and Spain.
Elsag Datamat provides service and software support for national and international space systems.
Telespazio won a ?102m contract in mid-2010 to build the ground segment of the Sicral 2 satellite and ground communications system for the Italian Ministry of Defence and French Defence Procurement Agency.
