Norwegian operator Telenor is reportedly in discussions with the Malaysian government about increasing its stake in Digi.com, the parent of Malaysia’s Digi Telecommunications.
Sigve Brekke, Telenor Asia’s chief, was quoted telling the Business Times that the company has asked the government to reconsider the threshold for foreign ownership in Malaysian telcos.
About four years ago, Telenor announced it would cut its stake in Digi to 49% in order to comply with foreign direct investment (FDI) rules in the country. To that end, it sold 76.5 million Digi shares, a 10.2% stake, for RM1.61bn (US$514m).
Telenor could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
