Austrian incumbent Telekom Austria has denied market rumours that it is in talks with Russia’s MTS. The Austrian government has also denied such talks have taken place, according to Wirtschaftsblat.
According to the paper and other publications, Telekom Austria has set up a six-person committee to examine an approach by MTS several weeks ago.
The rumours are not new, with Russian telecoms players having long been associated with expected interest in the Austrian group’s mobile assets in Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia and Macedonia.
Joseph Proell, Austria’s finance minister, has reportedly asked the company how it would work if it were part of MTS, and how the Russian group would value Telekom Austria’s past infrastructure investments.
The chairman of employee representatives has registered his annoyance to these rumours coming days after Telekom Austria had merged its fixed and wireless units.
