Telekom Austria (WBAG: TKA) has named Alejandro Plater as its new CEO in line with the wishes of major shareholders America Movil (NYSE: AMX) and state agency OBIB.
While an agreement between Carlos Slim’s America Movil and OBIB could have seen the Austrian government appoint a new chief for the incumbent telco, its supervisory board hired Plater based on the two shareholders’ proposal.
Plater succeeds longstanding CEO Hannes Ametsreiter, who is leaving to head up Vodafone Germany.
Plater, a former Ericsson manager, has served as Telekom Austria’s chief operating officer since March. He will officially take up his new role on 1 August and his contract period will run until March 2018 with an option for a two-year extension.
The telco’s management team will downsize from three members to two, according to the company statement.
Telekom Austria supervisory board chairman Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer commented: “Today’s decision is a good solution for the further development of Telekom Austria Group, and we have set a clear and cost-efficient management board structure”.
Ametsreiter was credited with turning the company around and implementing a convergence strategy in six out of its eight markets, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe.
