Telefonica Slovakia has revealed it won spectrum in the 800 MHz and 1800 MHz bands in the nation’s recent LTE auction, while rival operators remain tight-lipped.
Telefonica, which operates under the O2 brand name, will pay €40.3m (US$54.5m) for the spectrum, which will enable it to develop its LTE network, particularly in rural areas.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (TUSR) has yet to publish the results and was not immediately available for comment.
A spokesperson for Slovak Telekom, controlled by Deutsche Telekom, said auction conditions prevent it from commenting on the results before the regulator officially announces them.
Orange Slovakia, the nation’s other mobile operator, was not immediately available for comment.
Telefonica launched LTE services in several small Slovakian locales in August 2012 using existing 1800 MHz spectrum. The company said it believes it paid a reasonable amount for the newly-acquired spectrum.
Orange and Slovak Telekom also offer LTE services.
