Telefonica O2 Germany and Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies launched ‘friendly user’ tests of LTE networks in two German cities in late December.
In Ebersberg, the network is operating in the 800MHz band while the Munich network uses the 2.6GHz band. Several participants have reportedly been selected to test the networks for six months before they go live.
Vodafone was first to launch LTE in 1000 German local communities in early December. By the end of March 2011, Vodafone plans to have equipped 1500 base stations with LTE.
Vodafone has managed to launch LTE ahead of its two major competitors, Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica O2, which also won licences for 800 MHz in May.
