Spanish operator Telefonica is to put pressure on BT by offering fixed line services to residential customers in the UK.
Telefonica subsidiary O2 already offers mobile and internet services in the UK and will now provide a triple play bundle from March this year. With slowing growth in Europe, operators are increasingly looking to differentiate their service offering and given that O2 already offers fixed line phone services to business customers, a move into fixed line for households looks a logical move.
O2 said from March it intends to offer some of the country’s most competitive pricing, with fixed-line calls bundled into packages alongside its broadband and mobile products, with discounts to customers taking all three.
