Telefonica has streamlined its senior management by mothballing the position of head of Europe – currently held by Eva Castillo – and integrating Telefonica Digital into its main business, meaning Matthew Key loses his role as CEO of this unit.
The role of COO Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete will be strengthened as a number of additional units will report to him, and the head of LatAm, Santiago Fernandez Valbuena, will become chief strategy officer.
Cesar Alierta, the group’s head, announced the digital-focused reorganisation after it was approved at a board meeting today.
Eduardo Caride, who held a senior role at Telefonica Argentina, has taken over Valbuena’s responsibilities in the Americas, minus Brazil, which is being headed by Paulo Cesar Teixeira who already leads local subsidiary Vivo.
In the new framework, the company has created the roles of chief commercial digital officer, filled by director of strategy and alliances Eduardo Navarro, and chief global resources officer, which has been given to Guillermo Ansaldo. The latter was already Telefonica’s most senior resources executive.
Navarro and Ansaldo will both report to Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete, along with the CEOs of Spain, Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Latin American unit.
In a statement, Telefonica said Eva Castillo and Matthew Key will continue “to be linked to the group”. Castillo will keep her seat on the board of directors and continue as president of the supervisory board for Telefonica Germany, and Key will remain as the director of its British operation at Telefonica UK.
