Spanish incumbent Telefonica plans to invest E300m to build a data centre in the city of Alcala de Henares, according to reports citing a translation of local paper Diario de Alcala.
The operator currently has almost 100 data centres across the world but reportedly plans to consolidate these into six large facilities.
Alcala’s 80,000 square metre centre will join one being planned in Prague to form the only two Telefonica data facilitates in Europe, the reports add. The remaining four facilities will reportedly be located in Latin America.
In related news, separate reports suggest Telefonica is set to receive approximately E90m from Portugal Telecom’s recently announced E1.5bn special dividend payout.
PT has announced that it will pay E1 per share of its E1.65 dividend on 28 December, following this year’s E7.5bn divestment of Brazilian mobile operator Vivo.
The remaining dividend will be paid in 2011.
Telefonica and PT were unable to confirm any of the speculation.
