Spanish incumbent Telefonica is reportedly set to make an application to acquire the stake in cable TV operator TVA that it does not already own.
According to a report in Brazilian newspaper Valor Economico, Telefonica will apply to the telecoms regulator Anatel in the next week to make the acquisition.
This followed an announcement on Friday by Telesp, Telefonica’s Brazilian fixed-line subsidiary, that it had completed its acquisition of 49% stake in Lemontree Participacoes.
Lemontree in turn holds an 80.1% stake in Comercial Cabo TV Sao Paolo, which is part of TVA.
In September, the Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff approved a new law that opened up the country’s cable TV market by allowing foreign companies to own 100% of a cable TV operator.
