Sachio Semmoto, a director at incumbent Telecom New Zealand, is resigning due to a recent health condition.
Before joining Telecom’s board in March 2009, Semmoto had spent 30 years in senior management positions in companies including Nippon Telephone & Telegraph, Kyocera, and DDI Corporation (now KDDI), which he co-founded as an executive vice president in 1984.
“Dr Semmoto has brought a unique mix of entrepreneurial and technological skills to the Telecom board and it is with regret that I have accepted his resignation,” Telecom chairman Wayne Boyd said in a statement.
Boyd added that no replacement director is planned at this stage. “Given the uncertainty the company faces due to the government’s Ultra-fast Broadband initiative, it is not appropriate currently to appoint a new director,” he said.
