Montenegro’s minister for telecoms has met with a Telecom Italia executive to discuss the creation of a fourth player in the country, according to local broadcaster RTCG.
The Italian incumbent’s head of global partnerships, Paolo Murri, reportedly visited Vujica Lazovic, minister of information society and telecommunications, to hold talks about how the two may cooperate.
Telecom Italia declined the opportunity to comment on the report.
Montenegro’s wireless market currently consists of three similarly-sized players. A subsidiary of Norwegian group Telenor leads the way with 38% of the country’s subscribers. It is followed by Deutsche Telekom’s local unit, which has 35%, and Mtel – a 51-49% joint venture between Telekom Srbija and Telekom Srpske – which has the remaining 26% of customers.
Telecom Italia is currently plotting the spinoff of its fixed-line network as it aims to reduce its net debt to €27bn by the end of the year. Earlier this month the company posted disappointing quarterly results and its stock has fallen more than 19% over the past three months.
