Mobile operator Telecel Zimbabwe may remain in operation during its appeal of a government decision to revoke its licence, the country’s high court has said.
Telecel has appealed regulator POTRAZ’s decision to cancel its licence and close down its business within 30 days.
Reuters cited the company, which is 60% owned by Vimpelcom, as saying it trusted that its licence would be “restored permanently” following a “full and fair hearing”.
Talks earlier this week between POTRAZ and Telecel were “fruitful”, POTRAZ acting director general Baxton Sirewu told TelecomFinance yesterday. The Zimbabwean government is demanding that Vimpelcom reduce its ownership to a maximum of 49%, in line with foreign investment cap rules.
Spokespeople for Vimpelcom and POTRAZ were not immediately available to comment.
