Tele2 is a step closer to becoming a full network operator in the Netherlands after striking a deal to share T-Mobile Netherlands’ antenna sites.
The Stockholm-listed telco already has an MVNO, which operates on T-Mobile NL’ frequencies, but is now looking to roll out its own network following the acquisition of two LTE licences last December for €160m.
While Tele2 will use T-Mobile’s antennas on towers or rooftops, it will also install its own network equipment.
Gunther Vogelpoel, CEO of Tele2 Netherlands, described the transaction as a “milestone” and would enable the operator to build a country-wide 4G network.
In comments to Reuters Vogelpoel signalled Tele2’s intent saying that it wants to become a serious competitor in the Dutch mobile phone market. He added that Tele2 is not heavily investing in Dutch telecoms “just for a few percentage points of market share”.
In a joint statement Tele2 and T-Mobile said that the pact would lower maintenance costs for both operators. “In the current market situation, to have the lowest costs is a prerequisite to stay competitive,” the companies said.
The operators compete against larger rivals Vodafone NL and incumbent KPN. Tele2 has approximately half a million customers on its MVNO.
