Stockholm-headquartered mobile operator Tele2 has unveiled plans to bid for Dutch spectrum next year to upgrade its MVNO in the Netherlands.
“Reasons for us to pursue this opportunity are several, it allows us to grow long term cash flows and we have strong group experience from the mobile market,” said Gunther Vogelpoel, Tele2’s market area director for Western Europe, at the company’s Capital Market Day event in Sweden last week.
“Also, the situation is favourable considering the regulatory environment, the current market situation, as well as technology and business models.”
On 15 September, a local parliamentary committee decided to reserve 2×5 MHz of 900 MHz frequencies for new entrants out of the 70 MHz it will make available in this band. This comes on top of the 2x10MHz of 800 MHz spectrum already set aside for new entrants.
According to a spokesperson for Dutch economics minister Maxime Verhagen, the government anticipates the reserved spectrum will be allocated to up to two new entrants, while the remainder – 60MHz in the 900MHz band and 40MHz in the 800MHz band – will be available to spectrum incumbents KPN, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
