Several Philippine telecom operators, including Globe Telecom and Smart, have asked the government to free up more broadband spectrum in order to deliver improved services, The Business Mirror reported.
According to the newspaper, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has already reallocated 2300Mhz and 2500Mhz spectrum for broadband wireless and said that frequencies in that band, as well as in other bands, have been exhausted.
Globe was quoted saying that the 900Mhz and the 1800Mhz bandwidths were too fragmented, thereby limiting their potential use for 4G.
Instead, cellcos have reportedly requested the reallocation of the 700Mhz bandwidth for broadband use since its data capacity is better. The NTC has yet to respond to that reallocation request.
