Italian operators Fastweb, Wind and Vodafone are reportedly set to unveil a new broadband infrastructure investment plan later this week.
According to Dow Jones Newswires, the trio of firms will announce on Friday a plan to pump a combined E2.5bn into the sector within the next five years.
The need for new fibre-optic infrastructure to replace existing copper networks is felt throughout Europe and Fastweb, Wind and Vodafone appear to be ready to club together to finance the transition that will enable high speed internet services to be rolled out to 15 major Italian cities.
Telecom Italia, the owner of the current fixed-line infrastructure, is also expected to be invited to take part in the project having previously expressed a willingness to cooperate in a joint effort to boost broadband development through enhanced technologies.
Other operators and investors may also be invited to participate.
