Indian mobile operator Tata Teleservices plans to spend around US$500m to roll out 3G across nine telecom zones in India before the end of 2010, according to reports.
Earlier this year, the company won the right to offer 3G wireless data services in these zones, of which India has a total of 22, for 58.64 billion rupees ($1.3bn).3G services will be rolled out in 25 Indian municipalities from Thursday, expanding to cover 125-150 towns before the end of the year, reported Reuters citing MD Anil Sardana at a media briefing.
Tata Tele is in discussions with other mobile operators to extend its 3G coverage beyond its nine zones, the report added.
Indian rival Bharti Airtel is also reportedly planning to launch 3G services before the end of this year, while Vodafone Essar is looking to launch in the first quarter of 2011.Tata Tele was unable to comment before the press deadline.
