Indian mobile operator Tata Teleservices has awarded Chinese vendor Huawei a contract to roll out 3G in five circles, according to media reports. The move comes in the wake of the Indian government lifting a ban on Huawei and its national counterpart ZTE supplying equipment to Tata and its rival Reliance.
Tata had previously selected Nokia Siemens Networks to roll out its other four circles, according to reports.
On Wednesday, the Indian government started allocating 3G spectrum to seven mobile operators, including Tata, which received nine circles. The licensing rules allow telcos to roll out commercial 3G services from today until their licences expire, or for the next 20 years, whichever is earlier.
The government’s recently overturned ban reportedly arose due to Indian government concerns that broadband devices could contain spying technologies.
